Western Delta University is a privately owned university that is located in Oghara, Delta State. The university is a branch child of the Urhobo group of a group of Urhobo scholars under the aegis of the Urhobo Advancement Foundation who came together to form the university to serve Deltaland’s state.

The establishment of the university was birthed by the idea of scholars of the Urhobo community who wanted a private university that would serve the pupils of the community in 2002, but this dream was not realized until 2007 when the university was able to secure a license from the National Universities Commission (NUC), marking the first establishment of a private university in Urhobo Land.

Though the license was secured in 2007, academic activities commenced in 2008, a year after the license was secured, starting with just a hundred students across 21 departments and two colleges, namely the College of Natural and Applied Science and the College of Management and Social Science. They operated with a temporary license until 2015, when the university was granted a full license.

Since 2015, after being granted full approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC), the university has expanded in size and was able to introduce a new college into the institution, and it was able to introduce law as part of its courses in the institution.

The university as of recently operates 6 colleges, including a school of postgraduate studies, 42 degree programs, and with over 2,000 students enrolled. The university, to mark its 15th year anniversary of establishment, built a university clinic to celebrate this.
